Hooked up on the rocks on the south side of Samothrace, at the road to Pachia Ammos Beach, there is the small church of Holy Mary Krimniotissa. The access is difficult, but it is worth a visit and the view over the Aegean Sea and the island of Imbros will definitely amaze you. According to the legend, the church was built in the Byzantine iconoclastic period (730-843 AD). A religious image of Holy Mary was washed ashore on the beach. The residents of the area place the image nearby,(...)
but it was disappeared and was finally found after a time on a hill, just above. The event was repeated several times, thus the image was placed on this hill, afther a new chapel had been built.
