Holy Monastery of Saint Apostle Silas Kavala Just three kilometres outside the city of Kavala, along the Thessaloniki-Kavala National Road where it intersects with preserved sections of the ancient Egnatia Road, lies the Holy Monastery of Saint Apostle Silas. The monastery stands prominently amidst the western hills that shield the city of Kavala from the harsh northern winter winds. From the monastery's location, the view of Kavala is stunning, with its picturesque coastline and natural harbours stretching out before it. In the distance, you can see Thassos, the 'pearl of Northern Greece's islands.' The city of Kavala itself, perched atop rocky terrain and ravines formed by steep mountain slopes descending sharply into the sea, lends credibility to those who believe the city's name originates from the unique topography. This scenic site, surrounded by pristine nature, was chosen intentionally for the construction of the monastery. According to tradition, it was here that Apostle Paul and his companions, Silas, Timothy, and Luke, rested during their first apostolic journey to Philippi. This is also referenced by the marble column located just in front and slightly to the left of the monastery’s Katholikon (main church), which bears the inscription: 'According to ancient tradition, it was here that the Holy Apostles Paul and Silas rested during their first apostolic visit to Philippi.' The monastery is a men's monastery and falls under the jurisdiction of the Metropolis of Kavala. Within the monastery grounds, a marble plaque marks the exact spot where Paul and Silas are said to have rested during their visit to Neapolis.
