The Old Town of Xanthi, located in the northern part of the city, forms its historic core and spans an area of 380,000 m². The city was rebuilt after the devastating earthquakes of 1829, which destroyed the original settlement. Constructed on its ruins, the city developed around its churches, some of which date back to Byzantine Xanthia, as Xanthi was known in antiquity. In the 19th century, Xanthi flourished economically, supported by the tobacco trade and its strategic location on major trade routes. The Old Town is a labyrinth of cobbled alleys, featuring a mix of folkloric Balkan houses, inns, shops, late Ottoman-period churches, and elegant neoclassical mansions built by wealthy tobacco merchants. The city was built by craftsmen from Epirus and Macedonia and is characterized by its maze-like cobblestone alleys. It is filled with traditional Balkan-style houses, inns, shops, typical churches from the late Ottoman period, and Western-influenced neoclassical mansions, mostly owned by tobacco merchants.
