Located next to the Church of St Nicholas in the town of Kavala, the Apostle Paul Monument features a 35 square metre mosaic composition at its step, depicting the theme of 'The Arrival of the Apostle Paul in Neapolis of Philippi'. During his missionary journey (49–50 AD) in Asia (the second phase of his apostolic travels), Apostle Paul had a vision of a Macedonian man standing and pleading with him: 'Come over to Macedonia and help us' (Acts 16:9). This vision prompted Apostle Paul to come and preach the message of Christ, the Resurrection, and the Church in Europe.

In the winter of 49 AD, Apostle Paul set foot on European soil for the first time, disembarking in Neapolis (modern-day Kavala). From Neapolis, he travelled to Philippi via the ancient Via Egnatia, one of the most significant cities in Eastern Macedonia and a Roman colony at the time, to proclaim his faith. A monument has been erected at the site believed to be the location where Apostle Paul disembarked, honouring his first steps in the city of Kavala.
